What is Take Back The Night?

Take Back The Night is an event that started in the 1970s to promote sexual assault prevention and gender violence prevention. Every year on the last Thursday of April, the Take Back The Night organization selects 10 locations in the country to hold a march and vigil to show support for sexual assault and intimate partner violence victims called the “10 points of Light to Take Back The Night” event.

The University of North Texas is one of the “10 Points of Light” locations selected by the TBTN organization this year.

“[Take Back The Night] is a night where we empower survivors of sexual assault and have advocates come speak,” said Dr. Maureen McGuinness, Vice President of UNT Division of Student Affairs.

The event was held April 30th, 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., at the Onstead Promenade during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The event consisted of a tabling fair from many organizations such as Denton Friends of the Family and UNT’s Pride Alliance group, a march around the campus, and guest speakers to promote sexual assault prevention and empower sexual assault survivors.

“What UNT is trying to do is shift the conversation and that’s what Take Back The Night is all about,” said Kai Henderson, UNT Dean of Students Peer Advocate.
